A plane is about 310 tons. Lifting it and breaking against the force of gravity, sustaining the lift while moving it at super high speed through the air, while fighting the gravitational pull, requires a huge amount of energy. Without such air travel our world would be quite different, possibly in ways we do not like. Reducing the greenhouse gasses in this instance will take some undoing.
Reports show that the airline industry is responsible for nearly 3% of global carbon dioxide emissions, They have pledged to reduce that in the next 10 years.
It is estimated that the travel industry will likely add to the daily flights. Within this increase in travel, the struggle to reach that goal could be insurmountable.
The quickest path to reduce such emissions is with the use of “sustainable aviation fuel” (SAF) made from renewable sources.
But solutions in theory are always doable. The actual reality of this solution requires a tremendous amount of study, testing and money.
- Currently it is much too costly to produce. But this could be argued as relative as the actual cost on the environment is much greater. That said, governments could intervene to help offset this cost. Money always solves monetary problems. But this issue has deeper concerns.
- Can planes run safely on SAF. This study has not been completed. Will the engines require a redesign in order to meet this challenge? Most airlines have this on their future plans and are testing such matters. This will not solve the problem 100% but it isa move in the right direction.
- There is another alternative which sucks carbon dioxide out of the air and stores it underground. Is this a solution that leads to more problems or not? Is it real or just talk?
- Other options include battery capacity being scaled up to power planes, the use of hydrogen fuel made with renewable power. Many questions are still outstanding.

The hospitality and travel industry are greatly concerned over climate change. Studies have shown that numerous travelers visit certain destinations because of the eco-system and the various animal species.
For a simple example, an associate just returned from a family vacation. The pictures and the talk where all about the coral reef just off the beach, and the many fish species around the reef, which was highly protected from tourists so distance from the reef was required. There was one quick mention of the historical buildings. So nature and the eco-system garnered the most excitement.
The hotel and travel industry have their problems with sustainability. One of the major problems is food waist. What to do with the tons and tons of food waist created in these environments?
One solution is that each individual traveler can participate is to be aware of their own carbon footprint while on holiday.
- Don’t be a glutton. Be aware of your own food waist. Only take what you can eat.
- Bath towels can be re-used. After all you are clean when you get out of the shower or bath tube. Using a towel two or three extra times will cut contribution to climate change.
- In the same manner, hotels can simply invest in the most efficient machine washing systems. This will eliminate the use of water and the addition of soaps into the environment.
- Paper and plastic goods should be immediately eliminated. It is never a good idea to cut down a tree. There are recyclable products out there now. The definite issue falls back to money which directly relates to supply, which is not there at the moment.
There are many things, like refusing anything contained in plastic, that need to be done to reduce the problems facing with climate change. There are some very simple actions to start with and if more people get on board with this trip, then we will eventually get there.
